His father, Wen Lin, passed the imperial examination with the highest rank (jinshi) when Zhengming was two years old and later served as a magistrate in Yongjia County. Wen Zhengming's family originally came from a line of military men in Hengshan County, Hunan, and moved to Changzhou in the Suzhou area by the time of his great-great-grandfather. He derived his art name, Hengshan, from this ancestral connection.

Wen Zhengming was a central figure in the Ming dynasty literati tradition, opposing the professional, academy-influenced style of Zhejiang. As a member of the Wu school, he carried on the scholar-artist (wenren) tradition, seeking private patrons and eschewing official court politics. He studied under Shen Zhou and was deeply influenced by him, sometimes adding his own poetry to Shen Zhou's paintings. Wen's works were highly sought after by wealthy collectors in the 16th century, and counterfeits were common. His calligraphy was influenced by Song master Huang Tingjian. Wen regarded art and nature as inseparable, frequently painting nature scenes and gardens such as the Humble Administrator's Garden. His legacy continued through his sons Wen Peng (a seal-engraver) and Wen Jia (an artist), his nephew Wen Boren, his great-grandson Wen Zhenheng (a garden designer), and his great-granddaughter Wen Shu (a painter of flowers and insects).
